Model J50TLETF 1994

My dad and I have owned this boat for about 6 years, About 2 years ago we had the motor changed where now we mix the gas and oil together. We removed the oil pump and oil tank. We were having problems with it.

Lately when we run the motor at full throttle, it surges (Loses power for a second and then comes back to full power). Last weekend I noticed that if you push on the electric choke just a little it runs great. As if the key switch had a problem.

What do I need to do to fix the problem?

I'd say its time to tear down, thoroughly clean, and reassemble the carbs with carb kits.

Kerryco,

I am interested to know what sort of problems you were having that caused a decision to switch from the VRo2 to mixing gas & oil?

Mark42
We made the switch when we had to replace the it twice. The person who worked on the motor said he has seen several problems like we were having with the same year motor, so we changed it.

krryco,
I rebuilt the carb for my 35 and I'm not a professional mechanic, I'm an amateur fiddler. My carb was just slightly more complicated than a lawn mower carb. Unlike auto carbs, they don't have accelerator pumps and they're pretty simple. Just completely disassemble, including removing the welsh plugs. Clean thoroughly with carb cleaner, and reassemble. The only setting to worry with during reassembly is the float level, but it's a piece of cake.

For me, the worst part was just getting it off.

Install new kits. Do not reuse gaskets and seals unless you really like to do carb work. Do the link&sync procedure when your done. If you don't have a manual get one specific to your engine. Best money you can spend. You can check your library but they may not have a manual specific to your engine.
