Thanks in advance for any info.

Our 1994 30HP Evi started making a clicking sound when the throttle was in FWD. It would get louder as the throttle was increased which makes me think it could be the gears in the lower unit, or it's not fully going into FWD, as we experience no clicking noise when in reverse. This happened on a fishing trip so we were hesitant to run the motor any more then 1/4 throttle.

I drained the lower unit oil, and did not notice any metal shavings, and then replaced the lower unit oil twice, but still had the clicking.

Any ideas on what this could be? And what would be the best method for troubleshooting this?

Having little experience with outboards, would I be able to identify the problem by removing the lower unit? Or would that possibly cause more harm then good?

Thanks again.

Unhook the shift cable and try shifting by hand.If it works then the cable could be bad.

You cable also may not be set correctly to put it all the way in gear, if its not that then something is going on in the gearcase, theres a shift cradle that slides back inforth to engage gears sounds like thats the noise the cradle might not be bad but for some reason its not geting it fully in forward, you'd really have to take it apart and see whats going on ,,, good luck
