1993 Mercury EFI

I have recently purchased a 93 Ranger and noticed when I engage forward I get this knocking sound....like its still trying to go in gear, sometimes it knocks, sometimes it doesn't. After fully engaged I can take off fine. Any help would be appreciated.

Check your shift cable adjustment as it sounds like it is a couple of turns out of adjustment..

Possibly dumb question from me but....you aren't gently easing this thing into gear are you? You need to shift quickly. You'll do it no favors by easing it in.

I have tried easing it in and shifting it in fast.

I talked to the guy I bought the boat from and he said it has been making that noise for a while.
