Ok I just purchased my first boat a 1993 Ranger 361v with a 93 Johnson Faststrike 150. About 3 years ago the boat was put on the lift incorrectly and rubbed the paint of the transom. The previous owner had the transom repainted and when the painter rigged the engine back up forgot to put the oil hookup tothe VRO back on. This blew the motor. Immediately the owner took the boat to a Johnson authorized mechanic and had an entire new powerhead starter, the whole top halve put on the motor. It has now been 3 years and the boat has been used twice for a total of 2 hours on the new powerhead.
Now to my question. When i went to buy the boat the owner cranked the boat without the muff for about 2 seconds from being not run in a week and i noticed flumes coming from the prop and from next to where you can hook up a hose on the back on the motor. I was wondering if that is normal.
Also after running for awhile and idling for awhile the fumes get really strong
Lastly after our 15-20 minute test run i took the cover off the motor (because it was smoking like after the 2 second test in the driveway) and i could not touch the powerhead for more than a split second it was so freaking hot.
My dad had a 1998 Champion with a 150 Mariner rigged on it that i am familiar with and i cannot remember that boat getting so hot. I'm new to outboard and want to know if that is all normal or if the engine is overheating. I have a temp gun what temperatures should i be looked for at the cylinder head?
