Bought a small boat w/ a 1993 Force 50hp 2cyl 2 stroke.
Once I changed the key ignition switch, the motor started. Ran for a minute and died. I want to say I lost spark in one cylinder then the other but can confirm, I know I now have NO spark in either now.
I open things up and the stator is a 4 wire 2green 2yellow from a 1996+ motor when it should be a 6 wire 2blue 2red 2 yellow setup with 4 wires going to the switch box.
If you look at pictures attached, currently I have 2green going to a mysterious (to me) long box which puts out a black ground and a single blue wire to the switch box. The two yellow from the stator still go to the rectifier like they should I think.
The switch box red wires and light blue wire are capped off where the correct stator should plug into. Stator and trigger resistance seem ok.
Where do I go with this, what is the small long box connected to the switch box? It's not a rectifier as I still have the normal silver rectifier box not pictured. How did all this run before loosing spark?

Update. It's part number 834949A3 stator adapter. No idea what it is or why it's there. Definitely was not there from the factory.

Looks like someone adapted a newer Mercury ignition.
outboardignition.com for testing the systems.
By the way: it's Jury Rigged, Not Jerry

I see. I got a whole new stator, power pack, and wires. Coils were replaced already. Playing with it yesterday I noticed I was getting a tiny amount of spark from one spark plug but not the other if I unplugged the rectifier. It was so weak it would not jump a spark plug gap but it would jump a smaller gap holding the spark plug to the block. Switching the wires going from the power pack to the coils, the other coil would now do the same.
Sorry about the Jerry Riggin'... Jerry. My 40 years on this earth I never realized it was Jury Riggin' šŸ˜ Wish I could edit that so I don't look like a fool. I'm sticking to the story I wrote it like that on purpose to get Jerry's attention.

While some will assert that jerry-rigged is an inferior sort of word to be avoided, it is in fact fully established and has been busy in the language for more than a century, describing any number of things organized or constructed in a crude or improvised way. Jury-rigged and jerry-built are somewhat older and not generally criticized, and have the added benefit of having corresponding verb forms. Jury-rigged is the best choice when the makeshift nature of the effort is to be emphasized rather than a shoddiness that results; the one who jury-rigs is merely doing what they can with the materials available. Jerry-built is most often applied when something has been made quickly and cheaply; the one who jerry-builds something builds it badly.
