Hello everyone. I’m new to the forum and looking forward to talking with you people on boat stuff. Anyway I have a pull start 30 hp evinrude outboard and the recoil assembly broke on the previous fellow that I bought it off. The part is discontinued by the manufacturer and no longer available. Has anyone experienced the same thing. And if so what was the fix. I cannot see my self out on the water taking the cowel off every time when I need to start it up with a rope around the fly wheel. Is there an aftermarket option or does the same part from other motors fit my 93 evinrude. Thanks in advance for any feedback. Chow.

Hi. Ya he broke it awhile back. I bought the boat off him snd the motor came with it . It’s missing the whole complete assembly on the top. I’ll try the link you mentioned. Thanks.

If your missing the assembly look for a scrap yard in your area or eBay can be your friend
You could also put a wanted add on Craigs list or Facebook marketplace you just never know what’s out there until you start looking.

Ya I watched a video on that process and way to advanced for my skill level. What if I take the tiller handle of the evinrude and put it on the Johnson. It will be electric start but tiller control. 🤔

Lol forget it. Looked into switching the tiller handle…looks even more complicated then switching to electric start…I’ll settle on my 6 hp for this season. Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Until next time. Chow.

Agreed. If your cross reference the part number you will likely find that recoil was used on many different models and years and even horsepowers. There’s bound to be one close by.
Don’t give up yet.

You want a recoil assembly with 2 pawls.----The pawls are blue in color.----You have the 3 rubber mounts for the recoil on the engine?

Yes 3 rubber mounts that are capped in silver steel.I have my local marine looking. For 3 weeks now…I tried evinrude parts.ca in Georgian bay they can’t help me. EBay seller has one but won’t reply to my question for a part number so I can cross reference it. …I’ll keep looking guys. Thanks so much for your advice. I’ll post once I find one. Take care.

Those recoil starters are pretty standard and used for years and years on lots of different HP motors. I had a '76 25 HP Evinrude that had one of the 3 mounting holes all stripped out. Eventually the stress on the other 2 would cause one of the "legs" to break. I bet I replaced that thing 3 or 4 times and never had a problem finding one at a boat shop laying on the ground somewhere or on an old motor that was no good. There's thousands of them out there.
