1993 Evinrude 200 TXT Peeing but no water at thermostats

Just got a new-to-me 1993 Evinrude ocean Pro 200 TXT. There was no water at the telltale so I replaced the water pump. Now I am getting water peeing strong at the telltale, and some water out the prop, but when I pull the thermostat covers, water blow-off valve cover, and sending unit no water comes out of any of them. I am not sure what is between the telltale and block that might be stopping the water. Any ideas on what I should check?

Probably ocean residue stopping it all up. Was it overheating? Were you missing any water pump impeller fins? Time to pull some covers and see how plugged up it is and clean.

I assume salt water use.....

I haven't put the boat in the water since I got it, and never ran it long enough to overheat. Once I noticed there was no water I shut it down.

the old impellar looked good. So good i wonder if the previous owner replaced it because the old one came apart (and is now lodged in the water passages somewhere).

Initially the telltale was plugged, but I cleared that. It loooked like it was plugged with the pluff mud that is common here. I guess that being plugged is a good indication there are other stoppages.

I'm not sure what covers to pull to start looking for blockages. I'd like to not pull the foot again if possible, but I was thinking of putting the garden hose in the impellar housing opening and attempting to sort of back flush the motor with the foot off. If there is a less labor intensive way to diagnose the problem I obviously prefer to go that route.

To understand this correctly you "ran it" with the thermostat covers off and no water came out....correct? Not sure there is an easy way here, and applying water at the foot would not back flush. Did you try spraying water into the thermo housing? That may back flush?? Water doesn't cool the motor until after the thermo let's it.

Yup. Pulled the thermostat covers, sending unit, and the water blow-off valve cover and ran the motor. No water came out of any of the openings.

So it sounds like I might have to pull the foot and stick a hose into the thermostat housing opening to backflush.

Never heard of anyone doing that but that just might work. Also, removing the lower end should be safer.

Trying to analyze this....water coming out TT so it's not the draw tube....and it's not the passages past the stat because no water is getting to the stat, so there must be one spot past the TT but before the stat. Not sure where that is.

That was my though process as well.

I'm going to pull the lower unit and backflush through the thermostat housing. I won't have a chance to work on it again until next weekend. I'll post an update then.

I wouldn't allow much pressure to build because you could blow a gasket somewhere.

The more I 🤔 nk about it probably best to just remove things and go through all the water passages.

I was just going to let water flow through. Like filling a cup.

If I were to remove things, what things would you suggest I remove to start checking water passages?

Pull the heads which would show all of the head passages and access to the areas around the cylinders.

Hopefully someone can give you more opinions on the limp mode tests first.

Something doesn’t sound right

Does this motor have a flush port/ tell tale combo?

What water pressure are you seeing with the engine at idle? Should be @ 3 psi for a new impeller.
