I just bought a boat with this motor and find very little about it, especially a service manual. I bought the boat for the boat, but it would be great if it turns out to be a good motor. Compression is 110-115, it starts and runs, but hasn't been in the tank yet. I expect the carbs to be a mess; seems like they always are. I found 15 year old posts on an Aussie forum stating that they are smooth running, bulletproof, heavy and thirsty, but I'm not sure they were talking about this motor. iBoats says it's a saltwater motor. The oil injection system has been disabled and the power trim is not all there. Need that manual! I'm sure some of you wise and salty folks know the lowdown on this thing!

I just re read your post... I have that same motor only mine is marked as a 1992. Yes I can say it is an awesome running motor. Probably the smoothest running/ idling outboard I have owned in my 60 plus years as a boat owner. They claim the technology is old, thus the classic name but I have owned a twin cyl merc 40 hp and a twin cyl johnson 40 hp and this 4 cylinder 2 stroke uses far less fuel than either of the twin cylinder motors. Also idles so slow you can almost hear each cylinder fire !! With that said, mine is in mint condition and been a garage queen all its life. I have it on a 16' Sylvan side console bass style boat along with three group 31 batteries and an additional marine starting battery along with loads of fishing gear, probably well over 1100 lbs or more. It does an easy 31 mph by gps but the power trim does give it the extra 3mph with carefull trimming.

I hope mine turns out that well. The power trim doesn't work on mine. I'm not sure what the story is. It's disconnected and maybe not all there, but I haven't gotten into it yet. I did find a manual that seems to be OK.
