Hello,
I use these motors to troll on Lake Erie at around 800 to 1000 rpms to troll while fishing. I only run one motor while trolling. I try to rotate motors to distribute run hours. I troll on weekends say 4 - 5 hours a day.
My question is there any special spring maintenance that needs to be done to to all the low rpm trolling I do?
I lay up with antifreeze and lower unit oil in fall and have marina tune up motors each spring which they say consist of all new plugs, new fuel filter in motor and water separator filter, carb adjustment and timing. They also check charging output, water pump.

Reason Im asking is I had two people tel me I should buy a kicker motor for the boat because those engines dont like long periods of low rpm's. I premix all fuel 50:1 and use Mercury premium synthetic oil. Thanks for your input.

Actually you are doing more maintenance than necessary IMO.

Timing should not change over the winter.

Carb adjustments are not necessary, unless carbs get dirty and need to be cleaned.

Antifreeze is not needed in an outboard.

Spark plugs should last more than a year, but are cheap to replace yearly.

If you have a water separator, change it yearly, and it will keep the motor fuel filter clean.

Change the water pump every 3-4 years.

A kicker would save some fuel, but it will add some weight. if the motors idle well enough for your taste, why add it?

Thanks for the replies. I always do too much maintenance my entire life.lol
The marina places antifreeze in motors to all members outboards stating that newer ones have pockets that hold water and crack engines. It doesn't cost anymore money since they have to do sink pump, baitwell pump, washdown pump and livewell pump.

i don't watch then check timing or adjust carbs or anything else actually but they say they do. The maintenance is actually quite affordable.

Hi
totally agree with you going pre mix at 50-1, but at low revs she will be over oiling a little. Little to worry about and just keep on doing what you are doing. Maybe keep a spare set of plugs handy. Cheap enough.

Thats what the service director said that I am over oiling while trolling. The new plugs last the entire season.
is there a build up of oil in the cylinder walls and rings that can lead to problems from this over oiling condition? I'm not an outboard guy. Lol Thanks.
