I am new to the forum so god evening to all. I just purchased and yahama 130 tlrq. I started it up with garden hose cooling and without a prop. There is a rattling noise coming from, I believe the drive shaft housing. Same noise with unit in gear and prop installed. The noise is at a level that may not be distinguishable if the motor is in the water. Dealer stated they change the impeller and pumps water fine. I replaced the lower unit oil which was very black. The noise sounds like two pipes being dangled from a rope which are being blown in the wind. I have not had a mechanic look at it as yet.
I hope some of you experts could help me ask proper questions.

Thanks for your consideration

Re: 1992 yahama 130 rattle noise from driveshaft housing

Some of the motors have some spring washers around the drive shaft and on top of the water pump housing that take the up and down slack out of the driveshaft/gears, causing a rattle if they're not installed correctly. When the water pump impellar is changed you're supposed to pull up on the driveshaft while tapping the spring washers down to eliminate that play. This just might be your problem. Wonder why your lower unit oil is so black?...maybe change it again and keep an eye on that. Good Luck!
