I have a completely worn out water pump - pitting, grooving, the whole works. The only rebuild kits are well over $100....

While I'm at it, I wanted to check the thermostat and see if that's still working. For the life of me, I can't find a thermostat on it anywhere? Does anyone know if there is one?

I would check the diagrams, but the model and serial number ink on the sticker wore off 20 years ago, so I have no idea. I've attached a pic of the diagram I think it is and it shows a thermostat on the back. However, I've also attached a pic of the back of my unit and there's nothing there as far as thermostat.

Many small motors do not have a thermostat

Yes, water pumps have gotten expensive the last few years

I am pretty sure your engine do not have any thermostat.
Looking at your pic of the idle relief/tell tale hole, it is a "Force" but old Chrysler style back from the early 70.es.
