Recently bought a used 16' boat with a 92 40hp 4 cylinder Mercury motor with oil injection. Looking for an operation manual but cant locate one, everyone says " not availiable"....looking fot information on priper filling ofvthe oil tank under the cowl, how full, how long of run time on the tank, any maintenence needed on the injection system or tank itself. Boat and motor are in excellent condition and would like to keep them that way. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Did you try the mercury site (you need to go into the USA site version, the Canadian version doesn’t work....or at least didn’t work for me). It you can’t get via the website, I think you can call them.

I have tried every site with a Mercury name on it over the past 4 days. No repair manuals or just operators manual even. All the sites say not availiable. Thought there might be soneone that owns one that would be willing to pass along what ever is important in the owners manual.

You might want to run with a 50:1 mix in your fuel tank.-----Mark oil tank.----Then calculate how much oil is being injected.----Or have a shop run a test on oil injection system.

Thought about having it tested, had some issues in past years with OMC vro injection systems. Talked to a couple local mechanics that swear in the Merc oil injection system so I have some comfort there. Previous owner had reciepts showing the motor was gone thru, tuned up, all fluids changed, tested etc before his trip to Canada last summer. Just looking for information on correct way to use, maintain, any needed service routines, etc on the injection system. Thought it woukd be easy to get some type of owners/ operators manual. Thanks for reading guys

Nothing really exciting to look for there. We got that exact model year 40 on our Backtroller 14. A full tank of oil will last the entire season under normal (non-commercial) use. There is no maintenance required on the oil injection. Trying to measure how much oil it uses is pretty hard. At idle it probably runs about 100:1, at full throttle around 25-30:1. It's a pretty reliable system so I wouldn't worry about it much. The pump itself is a little gear-drive unit and it doesn't have any serviceable parts in it. But I've also never seen one go bad.

Many thanks, just the information I was looking for. Always better to hear from someone with actual experience, rather than internet gossip

From experience with a similar age Mercury, I can tell you what probably does need maintenance concerning the oil tank/system. It's all of the tubing that connects the oil tank to the oil pump. It's probably shot and leaking by now. You have to replace it all.

I will look that over carefully, previous owner had reciepts from a dealer that went thru motor thoroughly late last summer.....how thorough no ones knows for sure, but thanks for that tip !!

Took the advice and looked at the hoses connecting the oil tank to the fuel lines. Actually they look new and they are soft and pliable. Felt squeezed and looked closely, no signs of being dry or any cracking. Thanks for the tip....feel much better knowing they are good !!!
