Hi Gents,

I have a 1992 Mercury 100 HP => S/N 0D129908 with low hours that's always been kept indoors mounted on it's 1991 16 foot Larson All American; except when it's on the water (fresh of course). My brother owned the boat before me, and it was his "Baby", and he treated it like one.

I was getting it ready for some summer fun and decided to swap out the Inline Fuel Filter, amongst some other chores. I thought it would be routine. But there was a Fram G2 installed and my brother had no recollection as to why (or when) it was installed. It could have been done by the dealer.

Of course I was expecting a Mercury or Quicksilver, but rather than temp fate, I thought due to age of the engine, that maybe a Fram G2 would be easier to find (especially in the interior of BC), and it had been doing the job for years with no ill effects. After searching about I found one at the local auto parts store. I gave the old one to the clerk to recycle, and he gave me a new one in the box. When I got back to the Cabin, and in the garage, I opened the new one and it was quite different than the old, and a bit larger in diameter. It didn't fit like the old one.

I was able to buy some new 5/16" Fuel Line and got the new one installed, but I really didn't like the way it fits, and I think I should go back to stock.

My Mercury, and my Clymer service manuals weren't much help on figuring out the OEM filter. All I got was it's a 74 micron filter, which I thought was a bit coarse, but may it is for a 2 cycle mix. (Comments please) Eventually, after searching on line, I called the local Mercury Dealer who after referencing the serial number (=> S/N 0D129908) said he had good news & bad news. The good news is it's current part number is 8M0207786. That bad news is he has nothing in stock. So I'm on the hunt for it.

I have no idea as to the real dimensions of the OEM filter, and wonder if the new one will be like the updated Fram G2. If so am I wasting my time? Is the new Fram G2 a 74 micron filter or is it finer and will strip out the 2 cycle that's mixed in?

Do you have any insight into these filters and where I can get the OEM one so I won't have something to worry about? Or am I just being too overtly cautious?

Thanks for the assist.

Filter are filters…. The difference is the filtration rating and pressure drop through the filter

You could not filter two stroke oil out of the gas if you wanted to ;)

The 5/16” line is a problem as it restricts the flow of fuel. Need a 3/8” in-line filter, if anything

The filter in question is a feel good, rock and stick” catcher. Should have a quality, 10 micron coalescing filter in from of it to remove any moisture that may get in the fuel

I decided to see if I could get an OEM Filter in Kamloops but the local authorized Mercury shop didn't have anything in stock. He did say the Mercury part number is 8M0207786. Some folks cross reference this to #14991 or #18206001 or #14687A2 or #14687A4 depending who I talked to; or what website I went looking at.

It was Part #14991 on the Mercury EzPartsWeb Site

Close to where I live is another authorized Mercury shop => CT Inlet Marine Repairs, just off the Barnet Highway in Port Moody. I called them and they said they had nothing in stock but could bring it in for me. They too said it was Part #14991 on their system, so I said sure.

When I arrived the one on the left in the photo below is Part #14991.

At first they were insistent that it was for my 100 HP Merc, but when I protested that the openings on each end would let enough fuel pass to develop a hundred horsepower, they agreed. It was tiny with about 1/8" diameter openings. They said there must be a glitch in the computer program.

They said any of there in line filters that had 5/16" line connection points would work as they are all pretty generic. I bought a Quicksilver 35-816296Q-2 which is a bit longer than the Fram G2 above but the diameter is far less, and should (I hope) fit better when I get back to the Cabin and install it.

So hopefully this is the end of my Fuel Filter saga. Certainly is tough to get even simple parts for my old 1992 Merc.;)

Gents, just an FYI that the new Quicksilver 35-816296Q-2 fit with the original gas lines today.

They’re the same filter combo as my 89 115hp 4 cylinder 2+2. The small filter points to the small diameter accelerator pump nozzles in the lower two cylinders. Remove the oil tank and you should see them.

Thanks for the tip. I never would have thought that.

The 100 115 and the 125HP mercury outboard from that era I have found that they have the poorest fuel delivery and filtration system of any other outboard the problem is that you should have 2 filters on that motor the first filter should be from your fuel tank into the engine I recommend installing a good fuel water separator if it is not too expensive but any good quality inline filter will work the reason this filter is needed is that if you don't have this filter installed you run unfiltered fuel through the pump which can get clogged or not be able to deliver the right amount of fuel to the motor due to the valves inside the pump not being able to open and close correctly from the junk that is being sucked up from the tank the second filter that you are talking about is to filter the fuel and oil that is coming from the pump into the carburetors most manufacturers install the filters on their outboards before the pump but not mercury of this era the engine itself is a great engine but it has a very poorly designed fuel delivery and filtration system
