View attachment 176486 What is the max HP range for the procraft my 1986 1750 is rated for a 150 HP. I run a 70 at present. Mercury and mariner run side by side with some differences like casings paint color and i,m sure alot more. I would think a 150 is a very heavy motor but If The procraft I saw (To be junked) is like the one your describing it has a higher side to the boat which may make it stronger and thus able to handle the engine. The privious owner I bought my boat from had a 115 yamaha and I guess he took alot of heavy guys out fishing alot and the boat has minor stress cracks just behind the seat on the top rail side. It is your call weather to buy the engine or not If you do sking and alot of WOT cruising it would be a fun engine to have on there. If your just an avid fisherman then I think a smaller engine would be better when it comes to gas milage and cost of fuel. These are heavy fiberglass boats but the flat bottom when on plane helps alot if the engine is proped right. Just some info that might help you out.

Re: 1992 Mariner 150

Mine is also rated for a 150, when I bought it it has a 1988 Mercury 150 xr4 it actually runs well but I did a compression check last week and found that number 4 hole has no compression. So I found another motor, actually the guy has 2 one is a 1990 Mariner 150 Magnum II which is pretty much what I have on there now, the other is the 1992 150 I was asking about. I am just looking for dependability and decent gas mileage and when it does need maintained it does not cost an arm and leg.

Tha little 2.0 motor is as simple and bullet proof motor thats been built with decent fuel milage for tha "old school" V6 motors providing your set up is good and is healthy.

Tha Mag II is tha same as tha XR4 (2.4 motors). There is NO difference in tha v6 merc/mariner. Tha 150 your lookin' at is gonna be a 2.0 motor unless its a Mag III (same as XR6) or an efi motor. Both are 2.5 motors. Did you check for tha difference in tha size of tha gearcase? Tha '92 is gonna have a big case with 2 ta 1 gears. Your xr4 and tha magII will have a small gearcase with 1.78's if they are still original so your prop will be a small hub and maybe wrong pitch for tha 2 ta 1's.........

The guy selling the motors has both a 1990 mag ii and a 1992 150 he will put the larger lower unit on which ever one I chose. He has installed the older 16 amp stater and reg on the mag ii both have been gone though new water pump oil pump carb rebuild auto oilers removed and several other things. The stock 150 has 2 new switch boxes and new relays along with the 40 amp stator. He did say that the tilt trim motor on the stock 150 was making some noise but seemed to work fine should I be concerned? I like the hot rod but prefer dependability. Which motor would you suggest?

Re: 1992 Mariner 150

Trim would be questionable. Some "normally" make more noise than others. Have ta say I would go with tha later 150. It sounds like its "period correct" which will make it easier to match parts for tha normal person (counter guys and online). Look at tha yellow wire bullet connectors going to tha regulators. Make sure they arn't burnt and/or discolored. Need to be "tight". If they are ask if tha regs. have been replaced lately.........Tha '92 should already have tha bigger gearcase on it. If yours had tha small one and you run your existing prop on it it will act different than your used to. Besides tha different gearing tha prop will probably "ventilate" when you hammer it. This is "not" a bad thing unless it goes to tha extreme. It may rev as high as 4 grand + just before tha boat breaks over. Some don't like that but It lets tha little motor clear and get up to horsepower so thats your choice. GL with it............

JAN. Ex mother-in-law had a '88 like yours with tha 2.0 150. After a little tweakin' we were very impressed (surprised) with tha performance.........

Thanks again, I was leaning towards the later model and you made my decision easy. Just got back from picking the boat up from the lake and getting ready to call him and take it out for the engine swap .

Check that Tilt not leaking, check all 3 cap seals are in place. When tilt gets noisy its usually air in the system.Fill and bleed system and noise should go.

Thanks I will check that. I ask about it when I dropped the boat for the swap and was told it was the electric motor that was making the noise and that if it ever went out in the future to bring it back they would replace it free of charge. I am a pretty good judge of people I am cursed with always being right about some one the first time I meet them and I feel good about these guys.

Re: 1992 Mariner 150

Wow honest mechanics. Took my boat out the guys for them to do the engine switch and I get a call today that says calls us we have to talk to you about your motor. First thing I think is o darn mine is in such bad shape that they don't want to take it in on trade now, but instead he tells me that it was only my head warped from overheating and that they have gotten it straightened out, they also had to replace the switches but that is seems to be running fine and do I want them to just leave my motor on the boat for a small fee for their time, trouble and parts. I hate to say it but from the mechanics I have run into in these parts this is rare most guys would have done the swap any way and just listed my old motor tomorrow for a large profit. They still have to take it out and run it on the water to make sure it is all good, but I got to say these guys will be my mechanics from now on which ever way it turns out.
