Went down to Atlantic Highlands Muni Marina and took off the shrink wrap and began getting the boat ready for spring. I have decided that I would like to replace the prop this year. I am trying to determine the proper size/pitch. I cannot see any size information on my current prop it looks like the previous owner painted the prop black. Does anyone have experience with a certain size prop for this outboard that will allow this engine to perform within the recommended RPM's ?

If it's not a bass boat or a pontoon then it's prob a 17p.... Without knowing how many RPM'S you are turning now with a light load at WOT no one can help you....

Re: 1992 Mariner 135 V6 Prop Size ?

Ive got close to a dozen props out in the garage. None of them can really be compared against the others based on advertised pitch except a few choppers I have that you'd expect given they are in the same family. Manufacturers numbers are all over the place and some props just plain suck. Ive seen aluminum Mercury props from Mercury that slipped 25% and would barely top 40 MPH at 6000 RPM. Then again I have a couple of 4 blade props that run negative slip numbers if you believe their stamped pitch numbers.

If his is a generic factory 3 blade aluminum prop it does no good to use his baseline numbers unless he wants to replace his current prop with something equally as bad. For most purposes with a 135, a stainless 3 or 4 blade 17-19 pitch prop of decent manufacture running WOT in the 5500 range will work unless he is a speed guy and wants to go fast in which case he has the wrong motor.

For pulling duty for most boats you would have a hard time beating a 17 pitch Solas Titan 4. The 135 V6 is going to run out of steam before it can over rev and the torque is pretty good with the 2.0 liter and that prop up to 5500-5700 ish.

The boat is an 18ft Angler Center Console. Mainly used for fishing the bays and ocean. I will try and get my WOT RPMs once the weather warms up a little.

Re: 1992 Mariner 135 V6 Prop Size ?

Hey guys sorry took me so long but finally got out today on the raritan bay. Great conditions with a normal load full tank of gas etc. At WOT i was doing 24MPH at 4200 RPM'S. The current prop on there now is a Michigan Wheel 3 Blade 14.5 X 17. Am I in the right range of RMP per speed/WOT ? Any recommendations, tips would be awesome. Thanks in advance.

You really should be more in the mid to high 5000's. 4200 should be your cruise RPM. I would start by checking your gear. A 135 with a 2.0:1 gear box should get you well into the 40's with a 17 pitch.
