Hello!

I am going to change the lower unit gear oil in my 1992 Johnson 48spl outboard. I think I need 80w 90 gear oil for my lower unit, correct me with the right gear oil if I’m wrong please. I have included a picture of what the current oil looks like and I just wanted to see if it’s alright for me to go ahead and change it or do the seals need attention. Lastly, I’m having a hard time getting the bottom drain plug for the lower unit out. It’s on there pretty tight and I don’t know want to screw anything up. Let me know if you have any tips for the stuck drain plug.

All help is much appreciated,
Thanks Tye Cope

The 2 phillips head screws should not be taken out.----They have nothing to do with changing the oil.

I know. I’m aware that those have nothing to do with changing the oil. If you read my post I wasn’t asking about those Philips head screw. I would appreciate replies with answers to my questions that I stated in the article. The purpose for that photo was to show you the condition of the oil that I explained in the post that you should’ve read before replying.

Your oil looks fine. Use 80w 90 marine lube for the lower unit. Use hand impact to get the lower screw out if it is to tight. Maybe replace the screw while it is out.

Yes its 80w90. Best to use a marine oil it has additives that allow it to suck up more moisture and hold it in suspension if you have leaks.

Get an impact screwdriver. It's the easiest way to get those stuck plugs out. You can buy them off Amazon for $10;if your or a busy don't have one. You use a hammer to hit it as you twist.

Seals aren't necessary but there a common leak point and there cheap. Replace them if you have them.

These lower units are not ROBUST.------Use the best recommended oil !-----I did not know what oil looked like when it was put in.-----Very , very hard to judge oil condition by looking at a picture.

I have used vise grips locked on to the screw driver to remove the screws that are too tight. But at home I use the hand impact driver.

The new replacement plugs (at least on the 25hp I'm working on) I have seen have an Allen head recessed in them they are easier to get a good purchase and remove those then the old slotted ones for sure.
