1992 Johnson 30 horse fuel issues???

I just bought a 92 johnson. I could not get it to run. The spark is good and the fuel pump seems to be good. While trying to start it if you back the schraeder valve off a little it will run for a few seconds while the fuel is coming out but when closed it will not. I am new to boat motors and probably need to rebuild the carb but thought someone might have a suggestion. Thanks.

How did you check your spark ?? At first guess it sounds like carb repair.

Yes it has a good spark.

Did you check the spark with just the plugs or an open air gap spark tester ?? What's the compression on it ??
