I picked up a 5hp gamefisher yesterday on a trade and it hasn't ran since last year. Tried to start it and it goes wide open until I shut it off or dies. If I keep the throttle on start itll kick and try with just spraying start fluid. My guess is a fuel issue. I would like to put a new carborator on it but I can't seem to find any parts for it.
I know that the carb is interchangeable with other engines but wondering if anyone has any input.

Model is a 225. 587504

Not sure I would replace the carb just yet. I would start by checking the fuel pump diaphragm. From the symptoms, it sounds like it is too lean.

The carburetors on these motors are pretty simple. Might be difficult to find a new one. I would clean up the one you have before trying to find a replacement.

Diaphragms are cheap so ill check those out. Think it would be a good idea to get a carb rebuild kit at least?

Carb rebuild kit might be a good idea. The problem is that depending on the year of the motor, it's sometimes hard to find the right one.
The diaphragm looks like it's in one piece, however if it's stiff/hard and not flexible, it will not work right..

The diaphragm in the pic is bad, it should be smooth and no swelling.
Finding a new carb, nope.
There's a used one on ebay

But you probably don't need a carb.
Make sure all the passages in the carb are clear, a can of spray cleaner with the little red nozzle will help get to the small spaces and a welders tip tool can help a lot.
The carb repair kit is available but rebuilding can be tricky if you don't know what to do.

Had a similar issue with a 4hp Merc once. Had it cleaned w/sonic cleaner because it gummed up one of the small passages and replaced the diaphragm -ran like new after reinstall
