I have a 1992 Bayliner Capri (16ft) with a 1992 Force 70 HP. I have not used it since Sandy as I have been redoing my house. I am finally finished and looking to get the boat back in, The steering is locked up and it seems the "rod?" on the port side is seized inside the Outboard mount. If i disconnect the motor from both shafts near the grease plugs and turn the wheel the starboard side rod retracts as i turn the wheel. I would think the rod from the steering cable would be one piece all the way through the outboard but it doesn't seem to be.

What I could use is a schematic showing how the steering works under the outboard so I can post more specifically what my question is. Sorry that my description stinks because I don't know part names. What ever advice you guys can offer would be appreciated.

No Title

photo203025.jpg If your steering is like the pic below, start by unscrewing the cable nut from the tube and then shoot WD-40 on the tube and cable. While still disconnected, try the steering whee to see if it will turn easily. If it does, the problem is with the tube (as is always the case). Continue to work on the tube to push out the old grease and it should solve your problem.

Thanks for the quick response Jiggz. My steering looks fairly similar. I was able to remove the large nut seen on the left of the picture and when I turn the wheel my cable retracts out of the tilt tube. On the right i had to remove the (guide?") to move the motor at all. I would think the cable ran through but it seems to be two pieces since i can remove the left side while the right doesnt move at all. Does this seem correct? I found lots of old grease on the left side that was almost hard which i removed.

Well, it seems the problem is with the hardened grease. You can continue removing it manually and then spray the inside with WD-40 or even heat it up a little (be very careful not to overheat) to softened the old grease. Re-shoot the tube with light grease or bearing grease and just work it out a little and you should be good to go. If it continues to be hard to steer, there is a rack and pinion steering under the steering column and has one end capped. Remove the cap and shoot WD-40 into it and work it out also to lube it. Make sure you re-install the cap after lubricating it.

A propane torch on the tube.
NO HAMMERS.
Have someone push, pull on the motor as you turn the wheel and spray WD. on the shaft and heat it.
Grease just turns solid after a while.
I use 30wt on the slide part.
Then everytime I go out I spray with WD
