I have been working on a 1992 Evinrude that was kind of dropped in my lap to get running.Ugh.It had been sitting for some time and I was asked to mount it on the boat.
Mounting the motor was easier than getting it running.Ugh.After rebuilding the two carbs,I did manage to get the motor running, but it ran like junk. When it idled it would die, when it did run it would not stay running for any lenth of time, and adjusting the carbs did little to help the running.
I did manage to get the darn thing to run smooth, however it would not idle down to the point where it could be used. The RPM's stayed above 1500 RPM,which is not good for your lower end when placing it in gear.
I completely redid the link and sync and it still is not right,to the point when you start the motor with the throttle raised,as that is the only way the thing starts, the motor goes into the old "runaway" mode, and darn near melts down.Did that twice, and I gave up.

At a loss here guys,any ideas ?

did you check compression. have you changed the impeller since it sat up?

Compression is fine,as is the impeller. The Runaway was only for a short time, both times, but it was enough to let me know something was not quite correct.

Impeller was changed at the time of the carb rebuild, compression is 125 both cylinders.

Idle speed and idle mixture go hand-in-hand. If idle speed is too high you will not be able to correctly set idle mixture. Idle speed too slow and it won't stay running. So -- set idle speed to the point where it just stays running. Then adjust idle mixture. Lower idle speed again and repeat the mixture adjustment. Be aware that adjusting both with the engine running on muffs will require it be adjusted again in the lake as there is no back pressure on muffs. I assume you are using fresh fuel.

Thanks Silvertip,

Yes fresh gas.
I cannot adjust the idle speed any lower as the cam roller is not even touching the cam.The butterflys are snapped shut as far as they can go.Even then the idle is 1500 RPM.
I can get the motor to even out,but cannot get it to lower the RPM's any lower then 1500.
