I'm new to the boating world, and we just bought a '92 Sea Ray with the 3.0 Mercruiser in it. I'm a car guy, and one reason we bought this is because of the GM roots with the 3.0. I asked in another thread about mods for the motor, and I have found out that outside of rebuilding the motor and spending tons of money, there isn't much to do.
So, I have decided to focus on the ignition side of the motor, since this affects idle, starting, low-speed running, etc...
I was looking at ignition modules, and the system on the boat is a Delco EST with the remote coil and two-plug ignition module. Does anyone know if a standard GM ignition module will work in here?

Why? The existing Delco system works great and gives you all the spark that you need. Spend your time and efforts on maintaining what you have in the best working order rather than trying to modify your 3.0 hot rod style.

How are the plugs? Wires? Bellows? Cables? Synthetic 20W-40 in it yet? Water pump impeller? Gear oil changed? Gauges all working perfect? Hows the upholstery? The carpet? Sound system?

Many, many other things that will give you more enjoyment out of that boat than trying to give it better spark when it has a perfectly efficient ignition system to begin with.

It does do a great job, but I am doing a full tune-up on it, and I figured that the module is probably as old as the boat. I know that if it's not broke, I shouldn't fix it, but I was looking at replacing it just for age, and if I don't do that, I'd like to have something to go off of if it ever fails and needs replaced.

What are the "bellows"? The cables are okay, and I have it in the shop getting looked over and having the outunit serviced along with an oil change, greased, etc... I have picked up new plugs, wires, and cap and rotor, that's why I was asking about the module.
The upholstery is in great shape, as is the carpet, floors, etc... I did replace the tape deck with a CD player, and the speakers will be next. Some of the guages needed new lights, but other than that, it's in really good shape.
I got a heck of a deal on it, so I thought I'd play with it a bit :)

Great.. if he has the outdrive off, then the bellows will be inspected...

If you need help or recommendations with the stereo, ask over in the electronics forum. I uh.. kinda.. um.. have a thing with those things if you can't tell by the sig. :D

Yeah, I had him service the outunit, and the gimble bearing needs replaced along with the boot.
I'm not going to go too crazy with the stereo, I just changed the head unit so that I can listen to CDs and use an mp3 player. I do have a grounding issue with the left speaker that I need to trouble shoot, but I can get both of them to work with no problem.
That is a heck of a system for a boat!
