Hi All, Purchased a '91 Searay 170 this past fall. I knew it had a little rot on the floor, and thought it had a blown head gasket. I got a great deal on it and wanted a cheap boat for the local lakes. Figured id do a little work on it and see if i had time and if the family enjoyed it enough to upgrade to a 18 or 19 in the near future.

Well, Once i got it home i did a Compression test. Cyl 1 and 2 where good, 3 was a little low and cyl 4 was full of water. After draining it and changing the oil several times i was able to start it and it sounded ok. I then pulled the head and everything didnt look so hot. Had a friend pressure test the head and exhaust manifold and both has holes. My friend does marine heads so he had a near new head he put thought for me. I then pulled the block and had another friend hone the cylinders. I plan on installing new rings and connecting rod bearings. Still have to get a new exhaust manifold and riser.

On to the boat itself, I tore all the carpet out and started to plan on how to fix the floor. The farther i went and the more i read this site, i know what i NEED to do, but really didnt want to invest this much time and money into this project.... but i have come to the conclusion, if i am going to do this, im going to do it right. I pulled most of the floor up today to find what i figured, semi rotted stringers. Looks like ill be splitting the boat in 2 and doing a full rebuild. While its apart im also thinking of getting the bottom paint soda blasted off and see what the bottom looks like. Then im thinking of painting the hull a new color and then go from there. Looks like ill probably be keeping this boat for a while which is cool with me.

Im sure i will have lots of questions and lots of reading head of me.

day i brought it home

Good luck with your project. I always liked the lines on those early 90's SRs. Your rot is bad news and will be a lot of work to repair. The good news is, if you put in the effort to do it correctly, your boat will be literally better than it was new.

over the last couple weekends i have been working away on the boat. Broke out the skill saw, sawzall, hammer, prybar, and scrapper. Here are the results.

Got most of the floor removed and front seating area cut out, along with foam removed. Found a few rotted stringer spots. Also started making new interior panels to replace the rotted one. Enjoy-

Also have the engine disassembled, had the cylinder walls hones, awaiting new rings and connecting rod bearings.

i hvae a 1988 Searay I'm doing some rebuilding on (see the post below). When I sanded off some of the grey paint, there were several areas such as around the ski locker and besides the gas tank cover, where they had neglected to glass. Bummer, but I think I'm fairly lucky so far.

Welcome to I-boats, I'm doing the same type of rebuild on an 87 searay 170. I know how you feel, but if we rebuild them they will be better than new and will last our lifetime. Good Luck and keep us posted.

Thanks, thats exactly what my thoughts are. Once i finish rebuilding it, and the way i take care of stuff, this boat will always be properly taken care of and will last a long time, or at least until i want a bigger one, haha :D

Re: 1991 Searay 170 rebuild

It would be interesting to know more about how the previous owners treated boats that have developed these rot problems. Were they left uncovered and outside in all kinds of weather? Or were they put away wet? Every boat will get wet inside once in a while, but if left open to dry out in a dry place after being caught in a rain or rough seas, one would not think that rot would become a problem.

This and threads like it have me a bit worried. Our '92 Sea Ray 180 still has solid floors and no sign of deterioration. But then, since new, we have always kept it in a dry garage when not in use.

If kept in dry storage when not in use, how long will boats with wooden stringers and floors last? Any experience or opinions?

Re: 1991 Searay 170 rebuild

The guy i bought this boat from didnt really have a clue about boats. He bought it just for him and the family to run around on the local river across the street from his house. He had no cover for it and it just sat outside all year long- Since i bought it this fall, it has been garage kept and will be for the remaining time I own it. As long as you keep it stored properly and out of the weather, i dont see why your boat wont last forever.

My uncle has had 2 boats that be bought new. A '77 Rinker and then a '95 SeaRay which he still has. He owns a cottage on the water so these boats were/are used HARD all season long. I don't think he takes particularly good care of his boats but just the fact that he stores them in a boat house when not in use has prevented any rot. I'm sure your boat is fine.

Re: 1991 Searay 170 rebuild

I have been in the Coast Guard Reserve for 11 years and I just got My First Boat. Which is of course a 1991 Sea Ray 170. I just started tearing out the floor today and while cleaning out a boat that has been outside sitting under a tarp for the last 2 years, I found about 15 beer cans wood that was soaking wet and rotted. It smelled like the beer had been sitting in it all this time. This boat was apparently used to have a real good time. Luckily I never caught em. HAHAHA! But Im looking forward to rebuilding and I thank you for having the only GOOGLE retrievable thread about this boat.

Have you gotten pictures of this? I would love to see if I'm doing any of this right.

Thanks
