I have a 1991 Johnson 60hp motor. It belonged to an old man who let it set up the last few years of his life. I had the carbs cleaned, new filter, and new plugs. I still have a problem starting the motor. I will throttle up in neutral and try to crank it. After a few tries, it will start for a second then die. It will do this about 4 or 5 times, then eventually start. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Are you pumping up the primer bulb before trying to start? The 1st time it starts, keep pumping the choke until it smooths out. Since it has been sitting so long you should also replace the impeller.

I usually pump the primer bulb once or twice before attempting to start it. The old man that owned the boat would have told me if there was anything wrong with it. He has since passed, so I cannot talk to him about it.

Hello Honda1

I have exactly the same problem as the one you describe (Evinrude 60HP, 1990).

The battery is OK!
Pumping the primer bulb OK!
Motor has just the carb cleaned, new plugs, new impeller.

Any clue?

Please Honda1 if you resolve your starting problem post on the board.

Thanks,

OK problem solved:

Procedure:
1) Pump bulb untill it is firm
2) lift the hand-gaz arm (sorry if bad English)
3) turn ignition key
4) Push key several times

Motor should start.
Good luck

Probably the warm up or throttle lever.

yann i have the vro60, i just bought the boat. it cranks fast but will not start, the plugs are getting fire. it did start once and sounded good. i had it hooked up to the water hose at that time. but now if it fires at all it will only run a few seconds. any ideas anyone? also what is the purpose of the round knob located directly under the ignition switch. does it adjust something or what. thanks and have a great day!
