This has happened on 2 occ. Put boat in water, starts fine, runs great for 2-3 minutes, shuts off like it ran out of gas. Won't restart without the idle assist, but will run. As soon as you take the idle assist off motor dies. Took it to shop and they are telling me its the crank seal. He said "once it heats up, it seizes. Cools down starts fine and then it happens all over again." Now he has not torn the engine apart, he just thinks this is the problem, and i'm looking at a $4000 repair bill. Oh, I drained the tank 2 weeks ago and put 5 gallons of gas. He's saying there was 3 gallons of water and about 1 gallon of gas in the tank. Does this sound plausible? Any help would be appreciated.

When it comes to a $4000 repair bill, I'd look for another shop and mechanic. There are too many "hucksters" out there and he sounds like one !!

When you drained the fuel tank, did you find any signs of water? OMC made two distinctly different 150 engines this year, the old crossflow and the newer 60-degree loopers. What model are you talking about? When the engine shuts down, do you have spark on all 6 cyls?

No signs of water, 12 gallons of really nasty gas, boat sat for 4 years. Yes spark on all 6 cylinders. How do i tell the difference in the models?

UPDATE: went to see them today to pick up the boat. Its the crank BEARING not crank seal. My bad. Everything else is the same. I've lost all faith in this place. They took my boat to the lake to try it out, it did exactly what i described. When loading the boat back on the trailer they pulled it over the winch and the rubber Y block had fallen down so the boat was riding on the metal winch arm, gouged the**** out of the boat. when they did that it pulled the boat so far forward that it fell off the rear roller and broke the depth finder on the Hummingbird. Then, when they gave me the bill, they charged me $80 for 20 gallons of gas. When asked why they said they wanted to purge the system. I went home and sucked the gas out of both tanks and got just a little over 10 gallons. Now remember, the boat only ran for 2 minutes. I will be paying them a visit tomorrow.

When you say "idle Assist" you mean the fast idle lever on the remote station, correct? When it shuts down, does it slowly die out or is it a fast shut-off? When you go to start and turn the key to "On" are you getting the warning horn "whistle"? I cannot believe it would be a crank bearing. Two to three minute run time is not enough time to heat up the bearings. Most of the time when they go, they're gone. I'm thinking it's a fuel system issue. Get your motor out of that "shop"!

yes, fast idle, which is the throttle lever, you just have to pull out to get to the neutral position. when it dies it is a fast shut off and yes i get the whistle. my first thought was fuel, but who am i? and dont worry, its already out of there.
