My 60hp Johnson will start fine and appear to rev up in forward and reverse when on muffs. However, when I put the boat in the lake and attempt to give it gas, it barely moves and dies if I try to accelerate. It also dies when I put it in reverse. I replaced the stator and power pack about 3 weeks ago as they were bad and had no spark. Can this be the coil packs? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I doubt you had both a bad stator and powerpack.,----They all sound great on muffs.----They will bark and roar running on 2 of 3 cylinders.---The prop does no work spinning in air !-------So the first step in trouble shooting is a compression test.----Post your values here.-----And does the hose for the tell tale come off the side of the engine block or off the top ?

Sorry, the powerpack was replaced last year. The stator was replaced last week. I did a compression test yesterday and the all three cylinders read 92, 93, 94. Tell tale comes off the side of the block.

Service bulletin came out in 1994 to move the tell tale to the top of the block.----Instructions and parts are in the latest water pump kit.----So check for spark on all leads and check flywheel key.-----Did the performance issue show up suddenly ?------Perhaps remove head gasket to inspect cylinder liners.-----Head gasket is cheap.

Yes, issue started after I replaced the stator. Water comes out of the tell tale with a strong stream. I don't think that's the issue. When I attempt to go forward, there is nothing. The engine remains on and as I push the throttle forward there is no acceleration and then it dies out.

A wise owner / operator would make sure that the cooling system is up to date.------And good luck with your trouble shooting.

If that is CDI brand check the pins to make sure they are not bent in the plug. Also make sure the wires are in the right spot and correspond to the CDI unit. Could also have a faulty CDI or stator. Have you done a spark check?

Yes, I did a spark check and have spark. The engine cranks ok also. It is a CDI brand and I'll check the pins in the plug. Can any of what you're mentioning cause my issue? Thanks for the suggestions.

Have you made sure that spark jumps a 7/16 air gap? Why did you replace the stator? Also make sure the wires line up. Sometimes CDI will have them in the wrong hole

Checked flywheel key ??-----Or not sure why that is important to check it.

I will check the spark gap again and check the wires. Thanks.

The ignition parts on these engines are very good and reliable.------Most are replaced needlessly.------What other trouble shooting has been done ?-----Some will argue but compression values are low on your motor.-----I would also load test the battery.----And take starter apart for ohm check on armature.---Perhaps new brushes.
