My son got a free boat for cleaning all of the garbage out of it and cleaning out a small barn full of garbage. Got it prepped, steering cable unseized, Sea foam deep creeped the cylinders, pulled the carb bowl screws and pumped Seafoam until the crud was removed and Sea Foam drained, etc. Rolls over good with compression in gear and moving prop. A friend said the motor ran good but the people parked it when it wouldn't start up.. intermittently. The ignition switch is my speculation. It's jankety and a new one is on the way. The plugs may work, but I would like to get new ones. Champion L78YC is what came out of it. Turns out, they are not readily available in part stores. I saw some on Amazon, but I'm leery that they are knock offs. My question is... Is there an equivalent cross referenced brand plug that will jive with this respective outboard? Where can I look on this outboard for a vin/ serial to ascertain the exact year of it. I believe the boat is a 95-96, not sure if engine came with it, after it, or had laying around to put on the bought boat back in the day. They are digging up the titles for him. Any info appreciated about the plug situation. Thank you in advance.

Should be QL77JC4 and should be ready available. Check spark plugs for your model or post model number.

I just looked up model number locations. If it's on the side like I'm seeing, I don't recall seeing a tag. I don't see any on the pics that I just posted of both sides of the transom.

If it's a 96 then your original plugs are correct and they are still available.

I got the Model and Serial and its a 1996. Yes Sir, the plugs in it were what it called for. Every local part store in my town said they had to special order them. I found this site and it shows an NGK cross reference and recommends them over the Champion. "EVINRUDE/JOHNSON MOTORS SHIP WITH CHAMPION SPARK PLUGS. WE RECOMMEND NGK INSTEAD, AND TRADITIONAL ELECTRODE-GAP RATHER THAN SURFACE-GAP PLUGS WHERE POSSIBLE. WE HAVE FOUND THAT THE SURFACE-GAP PLUGS, WHILE LASTING LONGER, SEEM TO HAVE A SLIGHT PERFORMANCE HIT OVER THE STANDARD PLUGS." My part store has the NGK's in stock..yaaay.lol. Here is the link to the site that I just quoted from if anyone finds it handy....

That plug should be available everywhere. They used for like 20+ yrs. I would stick with Champions the Ngks can do weird things. Like foul prematurely, cause misfires just weird things.
