Hi recently bought a 2-stroke 6hp evinrude outboard from 1985-1990. Not sure of the year exactly, has a black cover. Not sure if it matters. Anyway. The motor starts well with the primer, but when you take it off it revs high, then slowly revs lower until it dies. Have had the same problems and symptoms on a suzuki dt6, and am not sure what is the problem. Personally I think it is just tuning the idle speed and carb, but im not too engine smart so unsure. Eagerly waiting a response.
Cheers

venting ok ?? try openning gas can cap o see if it runns better

try pumping the bulb if better possible fuel pump or simply a dirty pump filter under the fuel pump cap , bad hose, dirty fuel pick-up in the tank etc...

after that were are talking carb clean-up , bad coil etc....

yes sounds like it's running out of fuel. when was the motor last run? as mentioned above, the carb is a big culprit. the float needle could be gummed up, which means its only using the tiny bit of fuel it can get from the fuel in the idle circuit.

Not sure when it was last run. Was sitting for a while before I bought it. I'm having the same issue with a Suzuki. I read in another article to stick a copper wire up the float needle to unblock it. Is this true?

I have taken off the carburator and noticed a hairline crack in the top plastic part of the carb. I have attached photos.

could you seal the crack with crazy glue... cover it with a layer of Bondic glue (UV) which is pretty amazing. It works like dental repair filler

I have repaired the plastic bolt retainers on my 75hp ETEC lower covers saved me a ton of money >$2000 & been holding strong for a couple of years

What is Bondic?

Bondic is an alternative to traditional glue that works on most types of plastic and other materials, including glass, wire and fabric. With regular glue, you usually apply a few dabs to a surface and then use some type of clamp to keep it secured until the glue dries. Bondic is different because it is a welding kit that comes with a liquid plastic that responds to a UV light. It goes on just as smoothly as glue does but works with the ultraviolet light to form a tight seal or bond that will not break. This is a product that you can use when other types of glues won’t work.

Opened the carb. Above the bowl was this tube. The big part was detached. The rest was still attached to the hose part but crumbled in my hand.

Will try

What do I do to fix it. Is it a simple part or a whole new carb
Find a piece of tube that will fit

OR buy a new tube from iboats or your local agent

See the parts diagram on this site for the part number

Replace the wee tube.--Factory material is best.-----Make sure it does not interfere with the float.----Test run.

i will say again i've had a bunch of motors with cracked body covers and most had to be replaced so you might take a look at it again if that flex tube
part #0331740
doesn't fix it or it still runs strangely. and unfortunately no, you can't glue them back together unless you get it perfectly even so it seals properly. but you should be fine.

I agree a new top is best of course but just for a trial, seeing this a hairline crack it should soak a touch of crazy glue . a top layer of Bondic should do the rest. Bondic is pretty amazing stuff and sets up hard in 3 seconds using the provided UV lamp. ..just like dental repairs.

Yesterday I went to a marine mechanic. He had an old Johnson carb with the same tube. Got it off him and installed. Also used a plastic binder to seal the crack. Started it this morning. Idles superbly. But there is a alot of smoke. The motor was sitting for 2 years. Not sure of age of fuel. Does it need a good run. Or new fuel. Or both.

Check that fuel out. Pour a little bit in a jar and take a look at it. If it is dicoloroed or smells like varnish, or has any moisture in it, get rid of it. The smoke is from the oil in the gas. Two cycle outboards tend to smoke because you are burning the oil with the gas. This being said does not mean that the oil/gas ratio is correct, May be much more oil in the fuel than the motor requires by the manufacturer. If so, it will not hurt it to run the motor. If gas is o.k., just take her out on a lake and run it real good.
