We have a 1990 Wellcraft 170 classic with a 3.0 merc alpha 1 engine. When starting we have to hold the clutch button and throttle forwward everytime . When it starts it revs very high and then I throttle back . Is this normal to do everytime we start it? I also can hear a whining sound like a blower is running even with the key off so i have to disconnect the battery to keep from running down my battery what could this be?

Well it probably IS the blower;). Maybe the bilge pump? The blower switch is wired directly to 12V so should run with the switch off (same as the bilge pump). You may have a failed blower or bilge pump (auto float) switch. Go back and open the engine housing and look.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,... It's a Carbed motor, not Efi, advancin' the throttle is Expected,....

Most of Us, pull back on the throttle, the Instant it lights, rather than waitin' for it to Over-rev...

Follow the Sound,...

When ya find what's makin' the noise, you'll know what to turn Off....
