1990 v-6 thermostat--how to get it out of the housing?

Hello, I have a 262 cu-in GM-v-6 mercruiser engine, OC861086, in a '90 sea ray 200 BR. I want to put in a new thermostat and have the housing removed from the block but the existing t-stat doesn't want to come out. There is a metal sleeve that seems to be holding it in place from above? I've done some pushing and pulling but haven't had any luck removing it the thermostat. I don't want to push too hard in either direction as I'm afraid I'll be removing it in pieces. There must be a technique or tool for this?
Thanks,
Jason

Pull the brass sleeve out first. It holds the thermostat in place.

Item 10 in the drawing below.

Don, thanks for your reply. So the brass sleeve comes up and out first. Do you use some sort of a hook tool?

I use whatever it takes. Give it a try, you might be able to pull it up with your fingers.

The sleeve seems to be firmly in place. I think I'll just use the existing thermostat and verify it is working properly. I don't know how old it is and figured I'd replace it, but maybe I'll just use it as-is if it working. Save the new T-stat for when it is needed.
