1990 Maxum 2100SR

Hello everyone. Just purchased a maxum with the 4.3 and it needs just a little work. First I want to address is the steering. There is about 2 inches of play in the wheel. The play seems to be coming from the linkage directly behind the wheel. So what can I do to tighten that up? Second question is what spark plugs do you recommend? How's the 4.6 do for tubing? Sorry about all the questions.

Gah, yes you are correct. I have a mustang, so 4.6 is always in my head. Sorry bout that.

Welcome and congrats on the boat. Can't help you much with the steering and plugs questions, but can tell you, from first hand experience, that the 4.3L will be fine for tubing. Like Bubba said, just keep the passenger load reasonable. I just traded in a 2008 Maxum 1900SR3 with the 4.3L 190hp and it performed great for my needs (skiing / tubing) but I would limit the # of passengers when doing so. If I recall correctly the dry weight of the 1900 was about 2,900 lbs. Would suspect your 2100 is a bit heavier since it is 2' feet bigger. Good luck and enjoy the new toy!

The steering is some thing that you have to troubleshoot, usually with someone helping turn the wheel while you observe. As to repairing it, we need to know what type of system it is. (rack and pinion, cable wrap, rotary, etc.) if you are not familar with the different systems take a look here. http://www.iboats.com/Boat-Steering...8419414--**********.222146716--view_id.217122

For spark plugs go with AC - MR43T. If you feel rich and have a desire to lighten your wallet you can waste money on expensive plugs but its not going to make any real difference.

The 4.3 should be fine for tubing as long as you keep the number of passengers to something reasonable.

It has rack and pinion. I'm not really familiar with this style or how it operates. So I was thinking maybe the cable has stretched? It there a way to take slack out or do I need to buy a replacement cable?

Cables don't really stretch on these. Usually it's a failure of some sort. Probably best to look at replacing it. Teleflex is the brand you want to look at.

I would also check the gimbal ring on the outdrive and make sure its not worn or loose. If you can move the outdrive back and forth without it moving the steering wheel, then you likely have either a loose gimbal ring that needs to be tightened or a worn one that needs to be replaced altogether. Something to check into anyway when you have play in the steering system. Unfortunately, it's not a cheap or easy fix if you need to replace it...
