I just bought a boat this year with a 1990 Johnson 90hp. I have noticed that the motor is not charging the battery. I have replaced the battery and it seemed to work for awhile but then it also died out. I run a stereo and fishfinder when I am going, is that draining the battery to much?

What can I do to fix this problem? Can I buy a bigger regulator or something? I have thought about a second battery but I am not sure how to hook it up.

I am new to boating and do not know alot about motors.

thanks

Re: 1990 Johnson 90hp Vro not charging

Have you verified its not charging? Check the voltage at the battery with the motor off. Then start it and as it approaches 2k rpm you should see an increase in voltage. If you don't see an increase check your rectifier/regulator according to your manual. If you have ever hooked the battery up backwards, even for a second, then your rectifier will have to be replaced. Good idea to check the stator while you have the rectifier disconnected. Also make sure all the cables are clean and tight.

Welcome to the forum and as stated, it's much easier to buy a manual if you plan to do things yourself. Running what you state should not in itself cause the battery to drain. The system is not charging the battery for some reason, ie bad connections, bad regulator, bad alternator.
