My motor doesn't have power tilt and trim, but it does have the hydraulic cylinder thing on the back. That's only to help you lift it up and put it down right?

The tilt lock is on both sides...not just a small one sided latch like on smaller outboards.

Is it safe to trailer with my motor up? The guy I bought it from said that I should use the tilt lock and hydraulic cylinder and I'd be fine.

I've always used transom savers before.

I don't have the manual for this motor, thought I don't know if it covers this or not.

Thoughts?

I believe you should trailer with the motor up with tilt lock on.
My skeg repair last summer is a painfull reminder not to leave the motor in the down position.

Sorry, I should have been more clear.

Can I trust the motor's tilt lock and hydraulic cylinder to hold it up for long distance trailering? Or should I get another transom saver?

The tilt lock on this motor is much more substantial than my last, plus it has the cylinder. You couldn't trust my other outboard on the tilt lock alone, so I always used a transom saver.

I have no problem getting another one, but will it wreck the hydraulic thing?

get a transom saver. that is not the purpose of the tilt assist and the locks.

That's what I thought, but I've never had a motor this fancy. Thanks.

You already have your answer, but I wanted to agree and 2nd TD's opinion. I've always used a transom saver, not only to save my outboards tilt but to save my boats transom. Roads down here between Orlando and the east coast are horrible, and I would think 1 good pothole is all it would take to wreck a transom.

I have a 2001 50 johnson with that feature... and while it isnt power tilt and trim, it is the next best thing.

allowing you an infinate number of settings for shallow water drive!, plus taking the weight of the motor off lifting!!

Mine has a lever that once you pull the motor far enough up, that you can bring down and it will settle on the frame of the motor bracket and take the weight of the motor...thus taking the pressure off the "hydraulic piston" in your tilt ASSIST feature!!

i never trailer mine with out using that feature.

Ill take one this weekend...

it mounts under the transom bracket in the area of a tilt trim unit.

the lever to trailer with isnt much different than all other motors..you bring the motor forward enough and you swing down a lever and then you rest the weight of the motor on this lever while it rests againt the motor-transom bracket.

the lock anyplace you want hydraulic ASSIST feature is the cats meow , if you dont have power tilt trim...but while it isnt electic powered or have power driven hydraulic cylinders...it can go bad, as mine did and it locked...i couldnt lift of lower....until it was repaired.

but I really like it....

but id rather have a power tilt trim and a jack plate to be truthful!!! ha ha

the 90 does not have that feature. even with it you are better off using a transom saver. take the pressure off the transom.
