Some of our peeps were going to take the Boston Whaler 13 out to meet us at the big boat yesterday, but they had trouble with the engine (Evinrude 25 HP 1990 vintage).

The boat would not go above idle speed and then there was a loud screeching noise (maybe an alarm of some sort) coming from the throttle/shift control. The boat had not been running very long (maybe a few minutes). So they shut it down and put the boat away.

This engine, being 1990 ish, I am not aware of any sophisticated electronics - and I have yet to look at it. But . . . I thought I would post the question to see if there is some sort of a thing that would cause an alarm (or loud noise) from an 'old-school' control box ?

A 1990 is shown to have a temperature switch.----It is likely the overheat warning and needs to be investigated !----Sad that folks do not replace impeller every 5 years or so.

Thanks @racerone . . . that would be a quick check to see if water is pumping.

I have a feeling is is an overheat issue, but won’t know until tomorrow. No time to do boat things today.

I’ll make note of the model number then.

If you have a inexpensive thermal gun you can point it on the head and water jacket? Others might say but I think no more than 130 to 135. We always used a wax but that was back in the day.

Quick Update . . .

The engine seems to be fine today . . . so maybe there was some mud or something stuck in the cooling system. But I ran the boat for about 10 minutes including some high speed runs and everything worked fine.

I'm glad I don't have to do anything for now . . . already got enough boat stuff going on.

Count your blessings. I always love when they fix themselves!

Quick Update, while the boat was sitting at the dock today with the engine idling, the alarm went off. At higher RPMs it is fine.

So, looks like an impeller replacement is in the engine's near future

High probability it's the pump but could be stuff inside starting to plug up....is it ran in saltwater? Also, could be a failing sensor but not likely. I wouldn't run it until you take a look at the pump, you wouldn't want to plug up your motor with bits and pieces of impeller creating a much bigger job.

No worries- I’ll run it to take it out for the season. I probably will do a barnacle buster flush to dissolve some salt, then see about the impeller.

Salt water .
