1990 evinrude 150 how do i remove the gear shift/throttle arm

Hello i believe this is about a 1990 model evinrude 150, how do i remove the handle to mount it? There is a bolt inside the handle but it turns with the know so i dont think i can remove it as the head is somewhat recessed?

I don't have any experience w/ that style of control, If that's not a screw in the center holding the arm on I suspect you'll have to open the box up and find the fastener on the inside of that pin.

Go to Shop-Evinrude.com and look under accesorries for your model yr and control box. There's a good parts break-down there. That screw might be stripped.

You do remove the center screw to
Remove the handle. It may come off hard because
it is on a tapered spline. I did not under understand
what you were saying about the screw turning?

Try unscrewing the bolt about a 1/4 inch and tap the head with a center punch....it should push the handle out from the other side and you can then work it loose.

There is a large allen screw that holds that handle on. It is accessed from the back of the control box, so you'll have to remove the box from the boat. You can see the exploded factory parts diagram for that control box on the web at: epc.brp.com

As you can see from the photo its not attatched to the boat!
So i can easily see the backside and there is no allen screw on the backside of the box, ill try and see if i can get that bolt out that goes thru the handle...its recessed somewhat and there not much you can get a bite on though.............

Not all the way through the box on the back. From the back INSIDE the box. At least that's the way it looks here . You'll have to click on you year, hp, ect. once on the page linked.

Thanks, i bought this motor from my neighbor and im only going on the year he told me!

The serial sticker has long since come off.

Is there another way to determine the model number/year?????
Is it somewhere else?

I just used 1990 150hp and looked at the first model# under remote control and it looked like the one you have pictured.

There should be a welsh plug on the top of the head with your mod#....about the size of a half dollar.

The plug indicates that this is a 1987 Evinrude 150 XP.

my plug doesnt have the top number just the R number...what is the r number mean?

Last reply yesterday so the R is registration/serial number,lots of Evinrudes only have this number.The E number is model. I dont know how to find model from serial # hopefully someone else can teach both of us.
After lookin at your pic and the parts/schematic your style control isnt the same as the 1990 150HPs

You may want to try prying under the handle with a big screwdriver while un-screwing the bolt/screw.

Thanks, i will try prying under the handle when i try unscrewing it.

Can the model number be obtained from the r# thats on the silver plug?

If you would give a pic of the control box on your rig...plus another shot from the back of the plate with the control handle, maybe you could get a little more help to resolve your problem since you have no mod#. I assume you are trying to mount a throttle control handle from another box other than the original.
