I think the water pump on my 1990 Evinrude 120 is on its last leg. The tell-tale water temp is very hot when running on the hose (you can't put you hand under it for very long at all). When in the water it still seems to be very hot but you can hold your hand under it.
My tell-tale doesnt have a restrictor like my old 70hp evinrude did. Should the 120 have one? My 120 has about a 1/4" tell-tale hose.

Thanks,
Brett

No matter the water temperature from the tell tail, Id recommend replacing the water pump impeller every year, every two years at the very least. I see it as routine maintainance on these large engines as they do generate alot of heat, especially with any internal carbon buildup. Its easy to do and relatively cheap (compared to a rebuild).

Good Luck - mikec

Mikec is correct. And your impeller is operating now. It may be old,but at least it hasn't overheated yet. Now is the time to change it. I'm not sure of the restrictor.
