Hello. This boat is selling for cheap. 3000 CAD. If the transom is bad is it a major repair. Could I do this myself as a carpenter?

Thanks Mike

first, welcome aboard

yes, anyone can rebuild.

I suggest you start by going to this sticky from the restoration forum https://forums.iboats.com/forum/boa...r/295740-how-to-s-and-other-great-information

look at links 14, 15, 18, 2, 3, 4a, and 4b in their entirety. look at every video, etc. the knowledge needed to re-build a boat is there.

however three things are against you.

first, small boats are designed to last 15 years and be replaced. this boat is 30-31 years old
second, bayliner boats of the 80's, 90's and early 00's were not the best quality so they tended to rot. that rot is not only in the transom, however the stringers too. because of that, expect to also be doing the floor, stringers, foam, transom, and then some interior work. you will have to de-rig the boat and de-cap the boat to do the restoration
third, 3000 CAD is a lot for a rotten boat that you will need to sink 2000 CAD + (most likely closer to 3k) into to get the transom and stringers re-done along with about 6 months of your time

Even if that transom wasn't rotten, I don't think that boat is worth $3k CAN. Maybe I don't completely get the Canadian economy, but that boat looks pretty rough. And I agree with Scott: the transom probably isn't your only issue.

Gain another thousand bucks in your buget over the next few months and you can probably find something in much better shape that you like.

That boat was a turd when it was new. The dealership I subcontracted to sold these .. From the faactory they came with a 85 Force or the larger model with a 150 Force. People that bought em traded them in within a year it seemed..

Hi. That’s not cheap. And that’s coming from a U.K. guy that’s up until now, been amazed at how cheap boats are in the us compared to here.
