lol......to the OP

as you can see, there many opinions with the out board vs I/O ........so who is right ?

its a matter of taste for your requirements.
EZ does have a good point about the thousand dollar boas sitting in a field scenario.
im my experience.....on boats around 19 feet.....out boards are preferred in salt water or big water. in boards are preferred on lakes.....why?....cant tell you !

as far as your bayliner you inquired about......i agree with pass. strictly because of the OMC.....if it was an merc/alpha set up i would be all over it.

i drove 17 hours from canada to vegas to get this one for 1700.

it was the identical boat as the one you were looking at.....it needed a gimbal bearing and a new interior.

i fixed the bearing and used the boat with the trashed interior for 2 seasons.....then i started the restoration.....after getting the boat home.....i realized the boat had a new piece of floor thrown down over the old one. and the old one under was rotten......
i replaced the floor, re foamed the boat and re carpeted. then i re did the upholstery my self. I also re surfaced the gellcoat.......total money spent....approx 15-1700 above the value of the boat. but had over 100 hours work.
the boat had a 4 cyl chev. and pulled one skier, or one tube just fine.

i sold that boat for 7800 three seasons later.

the reason why i told you all this....is because any older boat in the price range you are looking at .....is going to need work....lots of it...from a new floor to a full gut transom stringers and deck. (this is why EZ was mentioning an aluminum hulled boat. the stringers are metal so they cant rot....but aluminum boats do leak from reevits, so there is a trade off)

before you purchase a boat in that price range, i would read some threads in the restoration section. dont get afraid of rot in a boat....it will happen....and can be dealt with.
the big thing is getting a boat with a good motor and drive.

If it is the OMC drive setup.........Do NOT buy it. You are into serious parts & labor $$$$$$$ IF you or someone else knows were ONLY used parts for it are located.

Mercruiser ONLY for used boats.
You can & will do much much better. Just take a deep breath & keep posting boats with the pictures & drive equipment in it.

I couldn't disagree more about outboards > I/O. The car based engines are much easier to work on and the parts and whole assembly are less expensive.

Strictly speaking powerhead to "powerhead" I absolutely agree with you. Unfortunately I/O's have lots more parts between the crank and prop than outboards do from which problems can arise.

soooo here's another thought... a friend of mine just bought an nearly identical boat but with mostly new upholstery. He gave $1000 for it and was on the water the same day.... same 2.3 and omc.... we looked at it this way... he wanted to be on the water without doing a project and didn't want to spend more... he also did not want a smaller boat and was in a hurry to catch the end of the season.... the $1000 was not looked at as an investment but rather just the cost of a typical minor repair on a boat..... He plans to run it till something major or nla fails and then junk/scrap/sell it cheap and find another boat.
not my style but works for him and while holeshot is less than impressive (with current prop) it runs out just fine with 5 on board.

lol....some times simple can confound the wise.....
there is always the "it works...its cheap and i want on the water today" factor.....but in this case the water is hard and the buyer has time

I'm in N.Virginia too. Are you planning on boating the Potomac this spring? Where do you plan to launch out of? I store and launch my boat at Quantico (Free ramp)

Let me tell you about the boat I just bought. A 1992 Bayliner Capri with a 4.3 Merdruiser V6 and Alpha One outdrive. The guy was asking $500 for it and said in the ad the he had some mechanical problems three years ago and hasn't tried to anything with it since. I asked him if he was firm on the price and he said yes. I drove 100 miles to see it anyway. When I got there I looked at it and the engine compartment was podered in yellow dust and there was some charring on the starboard stern seat cusion and some of the wires at the breaker switch looked burned externally. The seller explained that there had been an explosion that blew the engine cover 20 feet in the air. He got into the habat of starting the engine without running the blower. I hooked up a battery and tried the starter. It just clicked. I tried to turn the engine by hand and it was stuck. I said that the price would have been OK if the engine would at least turn and if I could get the starter to turn it. I bowed my head and stared at the engine for a couple of minutes waiting for a reaction from the seller, then I looked at him and asked how flexible he was on the price. He said that he had called a boat disposal company that offered to waive their fees in exchange for the title to the boat and trailer. I offered $200 and he came back at me with $250 so I took it. Sprayed some Knock'er Loose Peetrant into the spark plug holes and waited 30 minutes, followed that with Marvel Mystery Oil and waited 3 hours, started working it loose and after a few tries it turned. After a couple of days it turned better. Now a few weeks later it turns freely by hand with the spark plugs out. I have to replace the starter, got that used for about $30. I also had to get the alternator unstuck. I have been wiping the fire extinguisher powder off to uncover a beautiful mercruiser engine that looks new. This engine will run just fine in a few days. It has good compression and the wires on only chared medium rare. I found the fuel leak at the vent tube neck. I have spent about $45 so far on this repair. The oil looks like it was just changed, everything else works. I will
