1990 88hp Johnson coolant path openings

Motor ran great for first 9 years, but now I have been fighting overheating for the past couple of seasons. Water pump / thermostats / bypass valves all new. I currently have the Cylinder heads off, and sure enough, the rubber deflectors were swollen. The tiny flow space that remained was filled with debris & corrosion (salt water motor!)

I think the overheat is finally licked, but I have a question about the coolant flow path. I have cleaned all of the crud from the channels around the cylinders and found 3 water inlets on the port side - one on top of top cylinder/ small one between cyls/ and one on bottom of bottom cyl.

On the Starboard side I can only find two inlets. I have scraped all corrosion off, but still cannot find the hole on the bottom of the bottom cylinder. This is a hard spot to view, but I have used mirrors / spot lights / etc.

Any ideas? Remember it ran fine for 9 years.

Found it!

All of the other openings are on a vertical surface, but the lower most starboard inlet is on the very bottom of the horizontal surface.

I'l finish assembly & testing today, and hope it runs cool!

Cobb
