1990 40 hp merc not getting fire

I just replaced my throttle control box and it had no problem getting fire. It sat in storage for 1 month and will not fire. I pulled a plug and tried to get a spark to a bolt and got none. I put the old ignition that I know works to the motor and still will not spark. If the stator is the next check that you suggest how can I check it myself. Thanks for viewing.
