I've gotten alot of information from this forum and appreciate all the help that I have received. I know you guys like projects so I want to share one that I just completed. It's a 16' Sun Mate center console. The floor was so rotten that you could poke your hand through it. It's a friend of mine's boat and he's been nagging me to try to replace the floor. I agreed. I replaced the plywood floor with fiberglass sheets that I laid up then cut to fit. It wasn't fun...well, the grinding and cutting wasn't fun, but... the final product came out strong and rot proof. Here's the link : http://www.shareaproject.com/pages/projectTut,p,328,00.html Thanks again, T.

Amazing that the stringers and transom were OK. I wish I was that lucky!

Nice work.

Re: 1989 Sun Mate Floor Replacement

I think most of the rot came from rain water. It sat under a tree for a couple of years neglected. As far as the transom and stringers are concerned I drilled many holes and beat the heck out of them with a mallet. Didn't find any moisture and every thing was solid. The stringers(wood) however were raised about an inch from the hull, then glassed in. This is what I think prevented water from getting in; even with all of the water I found. The transom on the other hand had all kinds of crap screwed to it but it was well sealed with 4200. Guess I did get lucky. Thanks, T.

I would love to know how you made the fiberglass sheets? I am curious as to the dimensions...what is the thickness of the sheeting you made? How much did the sheets weigh after you were done? Just curious...I would love to redo my boat and am curious if I can just make everything I need, including stringers out of fiberglass, and then never have to worry about a rotting floor again.
