1989 omc bayliner 5.8 turn key on and temp gauge jumps to max temp position. Any reason why? This has never happened before.

Disconnect the wire off the temp sender on the engine and see if the problem still exists. If the sender is shorted to ground, that is what will happen.

With the wire disconnected from the sender the gauge still pegs full, disconnect the sender wire from the gauge, if it still does it, replace the gauge.

You might make a quick check at the back of the gauge. The ring terminal on the ground terminal may have swung around and is contacting the "S" (sender) terminal which will peg the meter as well. Or the ring terminal on the "S" terminal may have swung around to touch ground.
