My engine recently developed problems with shifting from neutral to forward. There is a grinding noise before it shifts into forward. Shifting into reverse is no problem. Is this a cable adjustment problem that can be easily fixed? Do you adjsut at the control throttle or at the engine. The repair manuals I have do not discuss any adjustment procedure.

Thanks -- Any help would be appreciated.

Had shifting problems with my 88 4.3, and it turned out to be the ESA ( electronic shift assist) module. You would do well to search the forum, as there is ALOT of information regarding your problem, to be found. Good luck to you.

If it's shifting into the gears forward neutral reverse, then the cable adjustment probably isn't the problem, I second the electronic assist switch, I can watch the linkage and see the actuator from my position at the controls with the hood off of course, you mighnt try that to verify the actuator is contacting the micro switch. Your idle rpm's may need lowered or the lower unit in dire need of some fresh lube.

Actually, my switches were fine, it was actually the ESC module that went bad. The switches are easy to test,,,,, just ring them out with an ohm meter. Again, do a search here on the forum for tons of info on your subject.

The ESA only helps when coming out of gear not going into gear.Sounds like its time to replace the lower shift cable.
A factory OMC manual tells you about the adjustments and they are critical on a Cobra drive. If not adjusted to specs kiss the gears goodbye...
Cable adjustment is done with the drive removed. There is NO WAY to adjust correctly with the drive on.
I have been down this road on Cobras.
Look for Searayman13 on Ebay.He will have the right manual.I have bought several from him.
Too bad i gave away my Cobra manual when i sold that boat or i could have scanned them and emailed you the shift info...
Its fall so its time to pull your drive and service everything anyway...
You will want to read this too...http://www.hastings.org/~stuart/cobra/kw-shift.html
