I have a 1989 mercury 4cylinder 115hp OC162434. I don't have the controls. I can jump it with the starter relay but I'm not getting spark. Do I need to hotwire the ignition to get spark or should it have spark already? Anybody know of an online wiring diagram for this motor?

Stop-----12 volts from the battery is not used to make spark for the plugs.---Mistakes with hot wiring can be expensive.----A factory manual is what is needed here.-

I actually bought the motor to part out. It cost me 250$. I just don't want to sale ignition parts that don't work.

Take a look at the CDI Electronics web site. They should have an ignition troubleshooting procedure for your ADI ignition system.

ADI systems do not use the battery to make spark. The switchboxes are grounded to kill the spark. Without controls, the motor would normally spark, when the flywheel is turned.

Thanks.
It actually might be the mercury tilt switch. I have the motor on its side in my truck. If that doesn't work I will check the website.

Go to max rules website has the CDI instructions for free. CDI is now charging for the info. Should not have a tilt switch. I don't think the tilt switch has anything to do with spark, I think it just limits tilt height.

With the motor on it's side, the mercury switch might ground out the ignition. Older Mercs' had such a switch. Not sure if your motor has one.

Agree on older engines having them. First nothing...hit a stump, engine lower unit slammed up out of the water, engine went to "destruct" rpms, gravity put the lower unit/prop back in the water running at max RPMs then whammo, knock out the transom or a mounting bracket.

Then comes shocks and the tilt switch to kill the triggers when the mercury switch on the mid section raises to a certain height...I think the 100 HP Merc 1000 had one and the shocks and then like my mid 70's 850, 85 hp, the mounting studs for the shocks becomes a convenient place for Mercs first power trim pistons. Later, with your 4 cyl, they put the tilt and separate trim pistons between the transom brackets with loop charging, lower unit styling and other changes for the "new" look. I had a marketed '89 115 I6 "Tower of Power" but found out later on here that mine was the last of the "direct charged" 6 cylinders and was actually manufactured for the '88 model year.

Mercury outboards have not used a "mercury filled" switch for on engines above 100HP for around 25+years. If it has the red stator thats most likely the culprit as they where POS

The motor has to be turning over at least 400 rpms to energize the ignition system.
