Suggestions to fix shifter neutral position most welcome. 1988/89 model Commander.

The shifter works perfect but neutral is positioned forward of normal. No idea why but want to restore to normal 90 degree up position for neutral.

You probably need a shift cable adjustment. Disconnect shift cable and set throttle at 90*. See if it has a detent to stay there. If so, leave it be and adjust shift cable to match engine.

MerCruisers have an upper and lower shift cable. If that doesn't fix it, maybe lower shift cable is incorrectly installed.

If the shifting is working correctly, loosen the allen screw in the handel, slide handel off and reset it to vertical, retighten allen screw
