1989 Johnson 40hp running on one cylinder

So I was just running it and noticed that lock nut for the timing was loose and spinning around , would timing cause my problems?

No points / condensers in that motor.

So I'm gunna check timing tomorrow and also I'm gunna ohm out the timing trigger
