Hello everyone.
I bouth the boat it come with 1989 johnson 40 hp and when I do the running test the motor run hot so fast and jerking
so much and here what I have done I have water pump, lowere gear oil, clean carburator and when I check compression,
I only have 90 on both cylinders. Also I saw this wire was not connect and I have no clue what it for. do I have to connect them back? And for this motor what is the right compression. If any one can tell what I have to do to get it run right or is the time to rebuild the whole motor?
Thanks,

Re: 1989 johnson 40 hp Please help.

You must mix oil with your fuel on this engine... mixture is 50/1.

1st picture shows the oil line is plugged.... VRO is used as a straight fuel pump.

2nd picture shows that the electrical portion of the VRO is disconnected which is proper when plugging the oil line, otherwise you would be receiving a false VRO warning via your warning horn.

Leave that electrical plug disconnected..... leave it alone.

The electrical tape is not a good seal. Plug that oil fitting with a short piece of hose that has a bolt in it to seal it properly... and clamp the bolt tight and also clamp the hose tight to the oil pipe.
