1989 johnson 150 cooling

I have a 1989 johnson 150. I got into some sand and overheated a little, but it cooled down and ran great. next time out i noticed that there was only a trickle (constant) of water coming out of the engine tube. i ran it a couple more times and it didnt overheat. i removed the lower unit and the pump housing and impellar looked good. i have ordered a new complete housing kit and a thermostat. Is there anything else i should do? what if i get the same trickle? there is a y fitting in the cowling one tube goes out the other just lays in the bottom of the engine compartment. is this right? any help would be appreciated.

Looks are deceiving, sand will tear up impellar/etc, well, like sand paper. You might also have sand in the pee hose, so with the lower unit off use hose or compressed air to blow out system via the water tube that leads up the mid-section to the engine. You can also use a flexible wire and go up the pee hose to loosen up the sand/junk that may be in there.

On my o/b, with the t-stats up high, pulling the t-stat would be a good idea as you can clean out the sand by blowing the other way as well, ie blowing with air/water from t-stats down, again with lower unit off

don't laugh, i had the same problem to day,8-11-07, i disconected each hose at one end and suched on the hose like i was syphening gas, each one of them had some clogs and all of this was done with the enging at idle, but now she pees like a champ.
