i have a 1989 evinrude 88 horse outboard it is a 2 cycle 4 cylinders eletric start power trim. it has a mind of its own. the trim only works when it wants to. the starter works when it wants to with the key and when i direct connect from the starter cellonoid to the battery. the boat has been out of the water for a year and sitting in the yard i moved it into my garage to tinker with because i want to get back on the water this summer. i have a full charge battery all connections hucked up all im getting is a clicking sound from ither the fuse box or the engine. it ran 2 years ago with the trim still a problum.
any suggestions greatly appreciated

Re: 1989 gremlins

Sounds like a poor connection in your main battery circuit.

Remove and clean all cable connections, particularly the ground cable connection to the engine block.

Let us know what you find, and welcome to iboats. :)

Do not use wing nut's on the battery connection's, brass or stainless nuts', and washers' only. Is it a good battery?

yes, the battery has a full 12 volts and there is voltage going through to the motor just not all the time. it has tryed to start 3 maby 4 times after that it just stoped trying and the starter is still good.

12 volt's is a dead battery, how old is the battery, and what is the true reading on the volt meter after cranking the engine? /

Re: 1989 gremlins

Go to the "Outboard won't start" article in Engine FAQs. Do the starter circuit troubleshooting with a good voltmeter.

Tell us exactly what you find. Easter egg hunting is a waste of time.
