The bendix needs to be lifted up to engage the worm gear and then using a crescent wrench and a 5/8 or 11/16 wrench to unscrew the top nut.
I believe the top nut is a locking type nut??
Make sure the battery cables aren't crossed, that can make the starter go backwards(ask me how I know). Second boat i owned, 15ft. 85hp. Mercury
I crossed the cables and burned up the regulator and couldn't figure out why the bendix wouldn't engage???
