1989 Evinrude 88SPL (E88MSLCER) Cooling

OK, I have to admit I am stupefied... When I took the water jacket covers off they were caked with salt lime calcium whatever... I've spent the last couple days descaling everything and inspecting for damage (1 jacket cover was beyond repair)...

I just was dry fitting the gaskets to be sure they were correct, and it occurred to me:
There are no holes for water to enter into this jacket.
It is literally a flat gasket with just holes for the screws.

How is this designed to work?
Does water flow through this?

I triple checked the gasket it is the correct one.
Did all that crap get in there because the gasket failed?

I'm all confusion

No I know that, water flow through the head didn't confuse me... I'm talking about the water jacket cover, It was totally caked with crud in the channels, like 80%, I assumed it was from water flow and little clearance between the gasket and the cover, there wasn't enough gasket material left to see what was going on...

I see no way for the water to get into the cover unless the gasket fails. That's why the channels in the cover are confusing me.

Here's a pic of the top of the head with the gasket in place, with the cover inverted to show the channels that are against the gasket, they look designed to carry water to me, but no idea.

Second pic is one of the covers packed with crud.

I guess if you say so, I still don't see how any water could get to those channels.
The only holes are the bolt holes and the holes for the spark plugs.
That means once it is bolted down those channels are on solid gasket between the 2 sets of three bolts.
Pic of the head with gasket now on the cover as it would be bolted down, the only hole being that for the temp sensor.

At the top of the cylinder head in your picture are there not 2 ports that go to the water jacket ?-----There are on a cylinder head off a 78 model that I just looked at !

That's the head in the picture(block side down), the water is isolated to the channels around the cylinders by the gasket.
Every hole in that gasket is for a bolt or the overheat sensor.
In my mind if they wanted water in there the gasket would be something like this...

I am looking at the head, I see no way for water to get into the cover. Head with gasket and bolts cover not on top of it... That cover is isolated from the water that comes from the top flows around the cylinders and exits to the thermostats in the head. Again talking cover not head.
